An Axe from the Past
Walkthrough
Forge and sharpen a granite tomahawk for Obsid Boulderboom by mining stone, crafting at a forge, slaying skeletons and Skindancer gnolls, and defeating The Octagorgon in Cove of Decay.
How to start
Examine the Cracked Stone Hand Axe received at the end of Little Tarby Lost. Obsid Boulderboom in The Thundering Steppes guides you through forging a heritage-quality tomahawk.
Notes & prerequisites
- Must have completed Little Tarby Lost to receive the Cracked Stone Hand Axe.
- Must speak Krombral (Giant-language) to receive this quest.
- Tradeskill level 9 required to craft the Granite Tomahawk.
- Heroic difficulty — skeleton and gnoll kills plus a Cove of Decay boss fight.
Steps
1. Examine the Cracked Stone Hand Axe
Examine the Cracked Stone Hand Axe in your inventory to begin the heritage quest.
Zone: The Thundering Steppes
2. Mine granite from wind swept stones
Mine 10 granite pieces from wind swept stones (uncommon/rare harvest from Gemstone Nodes T3). Upon receiving your 10th piece you are rewarded a pristine piece of granite and the Granite Tomahawk Recipe.

Zone: The Thundering Steppes
3. Craft the dull Granite Tomahawk
Scribe the Granite Tomahawk Recipe. At any forge, combine the pristine piece of granite with severed ash, a sparkling material, glimmering coal, and the Cracked Stone Hand Axe to craft a dull tomahawk.
- Requires tradeskill level 9 to scribe and craft.
Zone: Any forge
4. Show Obsid the dull tomahawk
Return to Obsid Boulderboom and show him the dull tomahawk.
Zone: The Thundering Steppes
5. Sharpen the tomahawk on skeletons
Sharpen the dull tomahawk by killing 100 skeletons in The Thundering Steppes. Upon defeating your 100th skeleton you receive a Sharpened Granite Tomahawk.
- This is a long grind — skeletons are plentiful throughout the zone.
Zone: The Thundering Steppes
6. Show Obsid the sharpened tomahawk
Return to Obsid Boulderboom and show him the Sharpened Granite Tomahawk.
- A one-hour timer for the next step starts as soon as you finish speaking to him.
Zone: The Thundering Steppes
7. Kill Skindancer gnolls within one hour
Within the one-hour time limit, kill 25 Skindancer gnolls around the Shrine of Decay. Skindancer sentries, seers, legionnaires, knights, and defilers all count toward the update.

8. Return to Obsid
Return to Obsid Boulderboom after killing the required gnolls.
Zone: The Thundering Steppes
9. Slay The Octagorgon for its ink
Enter Cove of Decay and slay The Octagorgon for its ink. The giant octopus cannot be pulled out of the water, and shortly after engaging it a group of heroic skeletons will spawn.
- After Octagorgon dies, examine highlightable crates on the ocean floor for a Partially Digested Hand — useful for Stiletto's Orders Intercepted.
Zone: Cove of Decay · The Thundering Steppes
Tips
- Combine this quest with The Dusty Blue Stone (40 rock samples from wind swept stones) and Journeyman Service (50 harvestables in Thundering Steppes) to save time.
- Craft the tomahawk before returning to Obsid — you need tradeskill 9 and severed ash, sparkling material, and glimmering coal.
- The Skindancer gnoll step has a strict one-hour timer that starts when you turn in the sharpened tomahawk.
- Cove of Decay is heroic — bring a group. Octagorgon spawns additional skeletons during the fight.

Quest Text
I examined the axe Obsid gave to me for saving his pet bear Tarby. The axe really might still have some magic left in it. I think I can repair it and return it to its former glory. I need to start by looking for a few stones to replace the cracked blade.
Completion
I now have in my hands a perfectly rebuilt Polished Granite Tomahawk! After repairing the blade I followed the advice of Obsid and sharpened the edge by defeating skeletons. Finally, after some coaxing, Obsid told me how to polish the stone. He didn't think I would find an Octagorgon but I proved him wrong. The Tomahawk now has a gleaming surface, thanks to the oily ink I retrieved from the dead beast.
